Theresienstadt is a former military fortress turned into a concentration camp during the Nazi occupation of Czech lands. In 1939 the Prague Gestapo police prison was established in the fortress and later in 1941 a Jewish ghetto was established. The camp was not set up as an extermination camp, but the conditions resulted in over 33,000 deaths and many prisoners were later transported to the Mauthausen concentration camp. The Czech government maintained a military garrison on the site until 1996. Then the fortress was shut down and abandoned. However, in 1994 a permanent exhibition was established and today the site serves as a memorial, museum and also as a research center.
